Hand-carved from natural shell, this cameo depicts a classical lady in profile with elegantly upswept, ribboned hair, set against a warm honey-toned background in rich 9ct rose gold. Shell cameos like this one became widely fashionable from the Victorian era onward, prized for their romantic, sculptural quality.
The oval portrait is held within a decorative scalloped border, its sunburst-edged frame and twisted rope detailing adding movement and texture around the carving. This ornate, ray-like framing style was a popular choice in early 1900s brooch design, giving the piece a bit more visual flourish than the simpler mounts of the earlier Victorian period.
A safety chain and pin are fitted to the back, a practical addition Victorians and Edwardians commonly added to brooches as backup security. It's a beautifully preserved example of period cameo craftsmanship, with lovely depth and detail to the carving itself.
