This charming little bonbon basket, part of our Deja Vu collection, is hallmarked Birmingham 1904 and crafted by Levi & Salaman, one of Birmingham's most prolific manufacturing silversmiths.
The pierced silver frame is worked in a delicate lattice of arched and linear openwork, rising to a gracefully twisted swing handle finished with neat scrolled terminals, a hallmark of quality Edwardian craftsmanship of the period. Nestled within is a vivid cobalt blue glass liner, its rich saturated hue glowing through the pierced silverwork, a striking colour pairing that was especially fashionable for sugar and bonbon baskets in this era.
The piece survives in good condition overall, and importantly the glass liner appears free from chips, a pleasing rarity given how delicate these coloured glass inserts are. A lovely find for collectors of Edwardian silver, this small basket would once have graced an afternoon tea table for serving sugar or sweets, and remains a charming, tactile piece of Birmingham's rich silversmithing history.
