A charming set of nine sterling silver coffee spoons, each finished with an elegant fan‑shaped shell pattern at the terminal of the handle. The spoons are the work of the Irish silversmiths West & Son of Dublin, identifiable by their distinctive shamrock mark, yet were assayed at the London Assay Office in 1907.
This combination reflects a well‑documented historical practice of the period: Irish-made silver imported into Great Britain was often submitted for hallmarking through a registered sponsor's mark at the London office, resulting in pieces that carry both an Irish maker's identity and an English assay hallmark. It's a detail that adds genuine historical interest for collectors of Irish and British silver alike.
The set is presented in a fitted case, lined in cream satin and mounted on a spoon rest, though one of the case's clasps has since broken.
