Sterling Silver Old English Pattern 6-Place Cutlery Canteen
This distinguished six-place Old English pattern canteen is a beautifully curated harlequin set, bringing together some of the finest English and continental silversmiths of the early twentieth century. Spanning the years 1906 to 1934, it tells a rich story of evolving taste and craftsmanship, yet presents as a harmonious whole in a classic Old English silhouette. Housed in an elegant oak canteen with deep green fitted interior, the collection offers a complete, characterful service designed to elevate every course at the table.
The set comprises Terry Shaverin knives (hallmarked 1994), their sleek blades and comfortable handles offering a contemporary complement to the vintage silverware. Eugene Leclere table forks (circa 1928) bring a refined, continental sensibility, while James Dixon & Sons dessert spoons and soup spoons (1927–1928) add softly rounded bowls and a gently weighted feel in the hand. Mappin & Webb table spoons and a single dessert fork (1906) contribute a touch of Edwardian elegance, contrasted with the crisp lines of Cooper Brothers & Sons dessert forks (1931). Completing the ensemble, pieces by Henry Hodson Plante hallmarked 1934 – created to mark the Jubilee – lend a subtle ceremonial note, linking the set to a moment of national celebration.
Though drawn from different makers and dates, each piece has been carefully selected in the Old English pattern, creating a unified aesthetic of understatement and grace. The result is a canteen that feels collected rather than constructed – a service that has evolved over time, gaining depth, charm and individuality with each addition. The oak canteen itself, with its warm grain and tailored interior, provides both secure storage and handsome presentation, ready to be placed directly on the sideboard or dining table.
Perfect for the host or collector who appreciates history woven into daily ritual, this harlequin Old English canteen transforms a six-place setting into an experience layered with provenance and personality. Ideal for special occasions yet resilient enough for regular use, it invites you to lay the table with pieces that have already lived long, expansive lives – and to continue their story for generations to come.
