This Vintage 18ct Yellow Gold Ruby Diamond Checkerboard Ring is a charming late Victorian gypsy-style band from the 1900s, its ruby and rose-cut diamond stones alternating in a distinctive checkerboard pattern flush-set into the gold.

Each gem sits in its own square X-shaped compartment, with vivid red rubies alternating diagonally against sparkling rose-cut diamonds to create the striking grid effect that gives the design its name. This "gypsy" or "star-set" technique, where stones are set flush with the metal and gently pushed over at the edges, was a hallmark of late Victorian jewellery prized for its durability and comfortable, everyday wearability.
